BREVILLE · THE TWO-LATTE DECISION
Barista Pro vs Touch Impress:
is the extra help worth it?
For a home that makes two milk coffees a day, the useful comparison is the preparation you want to do yourself — and what you would pay for help.
You enjoy the manual routine.
Choose it when tamping and learning milk technique are part of the appeal, and its local price leaves a saving you value.
You want help with preparation.
Consider it when lever-assisted tamping and automatic milk are features you expect to use regularly.
Our fit assessment uses the published specifications and manuals. We have not personally tested these machines or measured their taste, speed or reliability.

THE PART YOU REPEAT
Where the help actually changes the routine
Both models use an integrated grinder and a portafilter — the removable coffee handle. The Touch Impress helps with dose preparation and milk texturing, but you still handle the coffee between steps.
| Daily task | Barista Pro | Touch Impress |
|---|---|---|
| Grind and prepare the dose | Set the grind and dose; prepare the grounds for manual tamping. | Follow touchscreen dose guidance and the assisted tamping system. |
| Tamp the coffee | Press with the handheld tamper yourself. | Operate the lever for assisted tamping; dose feedback helps guide preparation. |
| Move the portafilter | Move the coffee handle from the grinder and lock it into the brew head. | You still move the coffee handle and lock it into the brew head. |
| Texture the milk | Use the steam wand manually and develop your milk technique. | Choose automatic milk settings; manual texturing is also available. |
| Finish the drinks | Pour the milk and attend to the coffee and equipment. | You still pour the milk and attend to the coffee and equipment. |
| Reset and clean | Empty the used grounds, clean the milk-contact parts and follow the manual. | These jobs remain; automatic milk does not remove cleaning. |

A SHARED FEATURE
Both advertise 3-second heating.
Breville lists ThermoJet heating and 30 grind settings for both current models. Its three-second figure is the heating system reaching extraction temperature. Grinding, preparing the dose, brewing and milk take additional time.
Our conclusion: compare the preparation assistance as a separate benefit. The heat-up claim alone does not distinguish these two choices.

PUT A NUMBER ON THE UPGRADE
What would the extra cost mean per latte?
Enter the extra amount you would pay for Touch Impress over Pro, using comparable delivered quotes in the same currency. Count only the drinks your household realistically expects to make.
What this measures: the additional upfront purchase cost spread over your planned drinks. It excludes beans, milk, electricity, filters, repairs, finance costs and resale. It is not a savings or payback estimate. Your chosen years are a planning assumption, not a predicted service life. No figures leave your browser.
USE THE RESULT WITH THE ROUTINE
Three questions before you pay for assistance
Which task do you want help with?
Name the task: tamping, milk texturing or following the settings. If you enjoy those jobs already, assistance may have little value to you. If handling the coffee handle is the part you want to avoid, both models still require that work.
Who will make the drinks?
Talk through the routine with everyone who will use the machine. Our view is that guided preparation may be more useful when several people want help with the same steps. That does not guarantee identical drinks.
Would you still buy at half the use?
Change two daily lattes to one in the calculator. With the example inputs, the extra cost becomes about US$0.67 per latte. If your household often buys coffee out or travels, use fewer brewing days too.
Cleaning is part of either purchase. Automatic milk stops at the selected temperature in its automatic mode; the Touch Impress manual still directs you to wipe the steam wand and care for the equipment. Choose a routine that you will be willing to finish after the cups are empty.

Two lattes a day? Compare Barista Pro with Touch Impress by the preparation you want. Both advertise three-second heating; that is the heating system, not a finished latte. Pro uses manual tamping and manual milk texturing. Touch Impress offers lever-assisted tamping and automatic milk. Both still need portafilter handling and cleaning. An illustrative US$600 difference, spread over two lattes on 300 days for three years, is about US$0.33 per latte. Enter your own figures and compare the routine at nicefindnow.com/latte/.
