Breville Barista Express vs Pro vs Touch Impress
Choose the morning routine you want. All three grind coffee and use a portafilter; the key difference is how much tamping and milk preparation you do yourself.

01 · BES870
Barista Express
You want to learn the manual routine.
You tamp the grounds and texture the milk. Start here if learning both skills is part of the appeal; compare the actual local price before deciding whether it is the better buy.
See the trade-off →02 · BES878
Barista Pro
You want manual control with faster heating.
Keep manual tamping and milk texturing, with more grind adjustments and ThermoJet heating. Consider this if those are the improvements you will use each morning.

Barista Touch Impress
You want help with tamping and milk.
A guided touchscreen, assisted lever tamping and Auto MilQ automatic milk texturing help with more of the preparation. You still move and lock the portafilter and keep the machine clean.

THE USEFUL DIFFERENCE
What happens between the beans and your cup?
On the Express and Pro, you prepare and tamp the dose, then texture milk with the steam wand. The Touch Impress adds dose guidance, lever-assisted tamping and automatic milk texturing.
That makes assistance a buying decision of its own. If you enjoy learning a manual routine, it may matter less. If different people share the machine, guided preparation may be more useful.
All three still need fresh water, cleaning and attention to the coffee you put in. More automation does not prove a better-tasting drink.

What you give up with each choice
Barista Express
There is no assisted tamping or automatic milk texturing. Budget time to practise the routine.
Barista Pro
Faster heating does not remove the need to adjust the grind, tamp and learn milk technique.
Barista Touch Impress
Pay for the assistance only if you want it. This is still a portafilter machine with hands-on steps, rather than one-touch bean-to-cup operation.
The current Pro product pages specify Baratza burrs. Current Touch Impress pages also promote cold extraction, while older manuals and stock may describe an earlier feature set. Confirm the exact listing if either detail affects your purchase. Barista Touch BES880 is a different model from Touch Impress BES881.

Which Breville fits your mornings? Express: learn the manual routine, with manual tamping, manual milk and 16 grind settings. Pro: manual control with faster heating, manual tamping and milk, and 30 grind settings. The 3-second ThermoJet claim is heating time, not a finished drink. Four checks before you order
- Check the full model name. Express, Express Impress, Touch and Touch Impress are different products. Match the code, regional version and included items.
- Measure the working space. Allow access to the tank and hopper, room to insert the portafilter and space for the milk jug. Confirm the exact width, depth and height with the seller before ordering.
- Compare the total setup cost. Include the machine, delivery and any genuinely needed accessories. Each machine already includes a grinder; read the box contents before buying another tamper or jug.
- Check local support. Read the seller’s warranty, return terms and voltage rating. Avoid choosing an overseas electrical version simply for a lower displayed price.
